Switching from Splitwise

Is Splitwise Pro worth it? An honest look at what you get

5 min readFamZam

Short answer

Splitwise Pro is worth it if you enter expenses most days and value not switching apps — it removes the daily expense cap and the ads, and adds conveniences like receipt scanning, currency conversion, and itemisation. It is poor value if you split a handful of bills a month, because the free tier already covers you, or if the only thing you want is the cap removed, because several apps have no cap at all and charge nothing. Check the current price in the app: Splitwise has raised it and changed what sits behind it more than once.

Key points

  • Pro is mainly a cap-removal and ad-removal product, with conveniences attached.
  • Worth it if you enter expenses most days and the group is committed to Splitwise.
  • Not worth it if the cap is your only complaint — free apps without a cap exist.
  • Price and feature split have both changed; verify in-app rather than trusting any article.
  • Subscriptions bought through the App Store or Play Store are cancelled there, not in Splitwise.

What Pro actually removes

Two frictions and a handful of conveniences. The frictions: the daily cap on adding expenses, and the ads. The conveniences vary by version but have included receipt scanning, itemised expense entry, automatic currency conversion, expense search, and charts. The frictions are what people actually buy; the conveniences are what makes the purchase feel like a purchase rather than a ransom.

The one number that decides it

Count the expenses you enter in a typical month. Not the ones the group generates — the ones you personally type in.

  • Under about 15 a month. You will rarely hit the cap. Pro is buying you ad removal, which is a taste question, not a functional one. Probably not worth it.
  • 15 to 50 a month. You will hit the cap in bursts — the week of a trip, the start of a month when rent and bills land together. This is the genuinely uncomfortable middle. Pro fixes it; so does a free app without a cap.
  • Over 50 a month. You are the heavy user the cap was designed to convert. Either pay, or move — but the current arrangement will keep costing you time every week.

When Pro is genuinely the right buy

  • The whole group is on Splitwise and will not move. Network effects are real, and being the only person on a different app is worse than a subscription.
  • You have years of history there. Exportable, but the reconciliation is an evening of work you may reasonably not want.
  • You want receipt scanning specifically. It is a real feature and it does save time on itemised restaurant splits.
  • An annual fee is genuinely trivial to you. Then the correct move is to stop optimising this and get on with your life.

When it is not

If your honest answer to "what do I want from Pro?" is "for the app to stop stopping me", you are paying a subscription to restore behaviour the app previously had for free. That is a rational business move on their side and a slightly irritating purchase on yours, and it is worth knowing that the cap is not an industry norm. FamZam, Tricount, Settle Up, Splid, and Kittysplit all have no daily expense limit on their free tiers. FamZam additionally has no ads and no paid tier at all, so there is no second upgrade waiting.

How to cancel Splitwise Pro

Cancel where you bought it, not in the app. If you subscribed on iOS, cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions. On Android, in the Play Store → Payments and subscriptions. If you subscribed on the web, cancel in your Splitwise account settings. Cancelling stops renewal; access usually continues to the end of the paid period, and your data stays — you drop back to the free tier with its cap rather than losing anything.

Export your groups before or after, either way: how to export your Splitwise data.

Frequently asked questions

Is Splitwise Pro worth the money?

It is worth it if you enter expenses most days and your group is committed to Splitwise — it removes the daily expense cap and the ads and adds receipt scanning, currency conversion and itemisation. It is poor value if you split only a few bills a month, or if removing the cap is your only goal, since several bill splitters have no cap and no subscription at all.

How much does Splitwise Pro cost?

It is an annual subscription, and the price varies by region and has been changed more than once. Check the upgrade screen inside the app for the current figure that applies to your account rather than relying on a published number.

What do you get with Splitwise Pro?

No daily expense limit, no ads, and conveniences that have included receipt scanning, itemised expense entry, automatic currency conversion, expense search, and spending charts. Groups and friends are unlimited on both the free and paid tiers.

How do I cancel Splitwise Pro?

Cancel through the store you bought it from: iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or Play Store → Payments and subscriptions. If you subscribed on the web, cancel in your Splitwise account settings. Your data is not deleted — you return to the free tier at the end of the paid period.

Is there a free app that does what Splitwise Pro does?

For the core of it, yes. FamZam has no daily expense cap, no ads, and no paid tier, with multi-currency support included. It does not currently offer receipt scanning, which is the one Pro feature with no direct free equivalent across most alternatives.
